Doca do Cavacas (seafood) – Madeira, Portugal (8/10)
Jul 8th, 2007 by admin
Doca do Cavacas is another seafood restaurant recommended by our Portuguese foodie friend, and given its breathtaking location high up on the edge of a cliff, we couldn’t not eat here. It was relaxed, not crowded or noisy, and we watched the sun go down during dinner at a table on the balcony looking out over the sea.
The menu was simple and reasonably priced, with the usual specialities of black scabbard fish, prawns, clams, mussels, octopus and so on. I chose a starter of grilled prawns (15 Euros) and the grilled fillet of scabbard (9.50 Euros). The others also had the scabbard, with grilled banana or mango as an accompaniment. About seven or eight huge succulent prawns arrived for me, more than enough for a main course, and each was savoured slowly, while the scabbard arrived simply grilled and very fresh.
Incidentally, I rarely mention wine, but the Marques de Borba (15 Euros) was light, fruity and summery, making it the perfect choice to accompany seafood.
The verdict?
Unfortunately, a perfectly pleasant meal was ruined by the increasingly rude and unprofessional service of one of the waitresses. When my husband commented on this to her in Portuguese, she became defensive and the manageress had to step in and apologise to us. According to her, the waitress was going to be fired at the end of the month, so hopefully you won’t get to meet her. Overall, the setting was wonderful, the food simple and fresh, but the experience was somewhat spoiled by the unpleasant waitress.
