Dok Suni (Korean) – New York (8/10)

Nov 5th, 2006 by admin

Dok Suni is one of my favourite Korean restaurants in New York, and that’s saying something, given the numerous Korean alternatives there. Be warned though – it’s small, always busy and they don’t take bookings (although this might have changed since I was last there).

It is more expensive to eat here than in the larger Korea Town restaurants, but as I lived only a couple of blocks away, it was convenient for me. I prefer the presentation too, although the portions are admittedly smaller. I’ve had the kimchi pancake, barbecued kalbi (marinated short ribs), barbecued bulgogi (marinated prime beef), seafood pancake and bibimbap (rice and vegetables served in a very hot stone pot, with optional raw beef and egg which cooks as you stir it) . The stews and soups, served with rice, are also extremely nourishing.

At Dok Suni, the meat isn’t cooked in front of you like at other Korean restaurants, but brought to your table already barbecued. This way, you don’t leave the restaurant smelling of meat, which is a plus point, although it’s definitely more fun to see the meat being cooked in front of you, or even cook it yourself.

Everyone who has eaten here with me has loved the food, which is always a good sign, although I have to say there are fewer options for vegetarians. For an excellent vegetarian Korean restaurant in a traditional setting, go to HanGawi, where I had a lovely birthday dinner many years ago.

Other NYC favourites – Florent in the Meatpacking District and Yakitori Taisho on St Mark’s Place!

10 – Perfection, 9.5 – Sensational, 9 – Outstanding, 8.5 – Superb,
8 – Excellent, 7.5 – Very Good, 7 - Good, 6.5 - Above Average, 6 – Average
