Goodwood Revival 2008, Sussex
Sep 23rd, 2008 by admin
Goodwood Revival classic car racing weekend takes place every September on Lord March’s huge estate in Sussex, where you can see some of the world’s rarest cars participating in the various races. Cars that you never even see in magazines, let alone at other classic car shows, are just casually parked and left unattended in the fields for anyone to look at. The event isn’t just for classic car enthusiasts though, as all visitors are expected to dress up in period outfits (1948-1966), so it’s a superb day or weekend out for family and friends. The husband and I have been going to Goodwood for a few years now, and we’re already planning next year’s trip.
There are also classic motorbike races and a spectacular line-up of classic planes in the aerodrome, with regular aerial displays above the track. For those who like shopping, there is a big market selling all kinds of memorabilia, from vintage clothes to books. And for the little ones, there’s even a small fairground.
As we discovered the perfect B&B in the nearby village of Bosham last year, we stayed there again this time. The full English breakfast was one compelling reason to return (more on that later this week). Last year, we had a miserable dinner at The Millstream Restaurant down the road from the B&B, so we ate at the nearby Anchor Bleu pub (where we had lunch last year. Review coming early next week).
At Goodwood Revival, there are many different types of food to choose from (not all strictly period, such as Mexican!), including Cornish pasties, fish and chips and organic beef burgers from the Goodwood farm. You can also pre-order picnic hampers, or take your own. Goodwood has its own farm shop, but strangely enough, it’s always closed during events, so I’ve never been there. And there is the Vitra Café, but it’s only open for corporate attendees and members on track days and so on.
Although I was still reeling from my English breakfast, I still managed to consume an organic beef burger (£5.50) and chips (£2.50) from the Goodwood Organic Food stall (there were a few around the venue). The burger wasn’t that great. I was asked if I wanted onions, but they weren’t even cooked and I had to take them all out again, as I can’t stand raw onion. The beef itself was alright, but it could have been slightly undercooked in my opinion. The chips were delicious though, and had probably been fried in lard. Very, very good and just the right shade of golden-brown! Husband’s Cornish pasty was undercooked outside but the cheese and potato filling was tasty. I might take my picnic hamper next year and buy some chips to have on the side…
I took hundreds of photos, as I love classic cars, and I keep changing my mind about which car we should get next! There are also many photos of people in their period outfits, which are fun. Just a few photos have been chosen for this post, but the rest can be viewed on my Flickr photostream. More in 2009!

what amazing pictures, helen! so vintage. almost looks like a step back in time – things were so classy back then. I’d frame that picture of the moving green vintage car!
You’re right, framing the picture is the closest we’ll get though – that Aston Martin DB4 Zagato is worth around $2 million dollars, even in a credit crunch!
GP
Amy & Jonathan – thanks! It was such a fun event, though I think I saw everything through my camera lens rather than with my own eyes! The outfits were just as interesting as the cars and planes…
GP – we’ll get there one day!
