Le Pont de la Tour (French) – London, England (4/10)
May 6th, 2006 by admin
I’ve had lunch twice at Le Pont de la Tour, once in 1993 and once last month. I remember being impressed by the food the first time, but it certainly disappointed the second time.
The riverside location is admittedly spectacular, with glorious views of the Thames, Tower Bridge, the Tower of London and the Gherkin, and being able to sit outdoors in the sunshine is always wonderful. However, last month I found both the food and wine to be overpriced, and I could have eaten far better in at least several Michelin-starred London restaurants for the same price or less.
The lunch menu was confusing and even though we were told by the waitress that we didn’t have to order the full three courses from the set menu (at which point I ordered just the main of roast cod and potatoes), we were still charged for all three, around £30 or so, and ended up having to ‘negotiate’ our bill. An outrageous rip-off. But this restaurant attracts a certain clientele that cares little about value for money or more importantly, excellent food. My friends and I would have been better off buying some wine to wash down some of the freshest fish and chips in the UK at Golden Hind.
10 – Perfection, 9.5 – Sensational, 9 – Outstanding, 8.5 – Superb,
8 – Excellent, 7.5 – Very Good, 7 - Good, 6.5 - Above Average, 6 – Average
