Second Helpings (May 08 Round-up)

May 31st, 2008 by admin

Diana bollito misto

A monthly summary about World Foodie Guide …

It’s been an excellent, though unexpected month. I was quite confused when I was checking my stats one afternoon, to see that I’d had nearly 2000 views and the number were still climbing rapidly. It turned out that Ilta Sanomat, the Finnish tabloid and the country’s second largest newspaper, had written about Hilary Clinton and John McCain’s 2004 drinking contest at Gloria in Tallinn, Estonia, and linked to my review. In the end, that single review received thousands of views! Since I started World Foodie Guide eight months ago, I’ve had 102,000 views…

Bestselling author and Beowulf scriptwriter Neil Gaiman linked to my review of Bar Shu, as he ate there (not with me though!) and recommended the dry-fried green beans. His fans have now read my review too…

Fodors asked for permission to publish a photo from my review of Ristorante Diana in Bologna, for an online interview with Mario Batali who loves eating lunch there. It’s the one of the bollito misto cart…

I finally completed my dim sum research after months of the stuff, resulting in Where to eat Dim Sum in London. I also thought it was time to summarise my current favourite eateries in London, in My 8 Favourite London Restaurants.

Cha Cha Moon has been receiving mixed reviews since its opening this month. It was a little hit-and-miss, but I recommended Alan Yau’s latest venture because of the promotional offer – £3.50 for every dish! This surely won’t last forever.

And I flew to Dublin for dinner at Cookes, which I shall be posting about shortly.

Thanks as always for reading World Foodie Guide!

Thank you so much. I never thought it would be such hard work when I started blogging, but it is worth it! I’ve decided to cook more at home as well, and give my husband a break once in a while…Let’s see if I can keep it up!

I’ve always read your blogs, but never have really given any feedback! But I thought i’ll give feedback today! =)

I love your post about where to eat dim sum in london! It’s really good and now i don’t stick to chinatown for dim sum! Thank you for all your hard work!

    Well done!

    Hi Vivi

Thanks so much for your feedback! I really appreciate hearing from readers. That dim sum post took a lot out of me – I’ve gained loads of weight as a result! There are still places I want to try, so wait for part 2 one day – Plum Valley (on Gerrard St), Yi-Ban in the Docklands, Golden Palace in Harrow. Have you been to any of these?

Golden Palace has been my dim sum pace for years! Haha. The last time i went there, may bank holiday, the food was delicious! Especially the Shanghai Buns (siu long bao)…..are they called shanghai buns? But yes, they were soo yummy, thin pastry wrapping around a succlent juicy meat. So amazingly nice! But i’m not sure how the standards are now though? However the only negative point is that I don’t find the food standard very consistent.

    =)

and apprently the 3.50 offer is here to stay at cha cha moon…..i heard.

    Hi Vivi

It’s great to hear about Golden Palace from a regular! I love xiao long bao, so I look forward to those. Thanks for the tip about the consistency too…and about the Cha Cha Moon £3.50 offer being permanent. It means I won’t have to rush back, and Alan Yau can take his time getting the dishes right before I try them again…

    Keep in touch!
