Tamburini – Bologna, Italy

[UPDATE: Dec 2008 I revisited Tamburini, so please see new review here]
While researching restaurants to visit during our eating trip to Bologna, I came across gourmet delicatessen Tamburini, which has been selling the best in culinary delights since 1932. It can be found amongst many other food shops that line Via Caprarie, Via Drapperie and other small streets running off these. If Bologna is the food capital of Italy, then this little enclave is its heart.
Even if you don’t buy anything, it’s worth going there just to have a wander around. The fish and vegetables are fresh, the cheeses and meats tempting, and there are jars and jars of the most wondrous sauces, condiments and ingredients so that you can attempt to recreate your dining experiences in Bologna at home.
It took a while to find Tamburini, even though we had wandered up and down every street. After eventually finding it, we discovered it was in fact right next to Atti, where I had been taking photos on the previous day.
So what can you find at Tamburini? Many kinds of salami, prosciutto, mortadella, lardo, culatello, bresaola, pig’s trotters. Numerous cheeses, including taleggio, provolone, ricotta, pecorino, parmesan and gorgonzola. Lovely fresh pasta, including ravioli quattro formaggi, ravioli all noce, tortelloni di zucca and gnocchi al porcini freschi. Balsamic vinegars, olive oils, sauces, local wines. Heavenly dried mushrooms, including giant porcini. There was even a framed picture made from various dried mushrooms (see top right of photo below).
But best of all about Tamburini is that at the back of the shop is a self-service area where you can try all the food (the entire menu is listed in Italian on the website). Sadly, we were too full to even attempt this, but this will definitely be a lunch destination on our next eating trip to Bologna.
Meanwhile, we bought an incredibly large bag of dried porcini mushrooms to enjoy at home. And if you’re too impatient to wait to travel to Bologna, Tamburini sells many of its key products online!

Ok, I’m officially depressed! Not only did I just return from a great (and delicious, mind you!) trip to Madrid, but now you’re reminding me of one of my favorite cities and of Via Drapperie where we stayed both times we’ve been to Bologna. These beautiful pictures are really bringing me back. Thanks for these posts and it seems as though you really enjoyed your time there and ATE (gotta love a woman who eats!). Thanks for these great posts. Me and my husband are going to get our act together this weekend and post on our trip. We put on about 4 pounds, but ate and drank SO well.

Hi Amy! Sorry about that! I’m a bit depressed too. We’ve just invested in a pasta-making machine, so that we can replicate some of the dishes we had. I’ll have to turn to you at We Are Never Full for some recipes! I must confess I do eat a lot, sometimes more than my husband, who’s a foot taller than me. I’m very much looking forward to the Madrid posts though!
