Wikio Gastronomy Rankings – July 2009
Jul 3rd, 2009 by admin
Wikio asked me to preview this month’s Gastronomy blog rankings for them, so here are the top 20 for the month of July. Word of Mouth stays firmly entrenched at number 1, but most notably Ambrosia and Nectar have leapt into 4th place, while Domestic Goddess in Training has also made it to the top 10. I’m still at no.10, where I’ve been for at least two months.
The big change is that wine and beer blogs have now been moved from Gastronomy into their own Wine and Beer category, which means farewell to Spittoon, although spittoonextra remains with us. Please visit Wine Conversation to see their top 20 and to discuss whether this is a popular move or not.
As some of you have been asking this question, I copied and pasted the following from Wikio:
How are these rankings compiled?
The position of a blog in the Wikio ranking depends on the number and weight of the incoming links from other blogs. These links are dynamic, which means that they are backlinks or links found within articles.
Only links found in the RSS feed are included. Blogrolls are not taken into account, and the weight of any given link increases according to how recently it was published. We thus hope to provide a classification that is more representative of the current influence levels of the blogs therein.
Moreover, the weight of a link depends on the linking blog’s position in the Wikio ranking. With our algorithm, the weight of a link from a top blog is greater than that of a link from a blog that is less well ranked.
Our rankings are updated on a monthly basis and also include Top Blogs for several categories: Technology, Politics, etc. New categories will be added on a regular basis.

Helen, thanks for this as I had not been aware of Wikio before. I have submitted my blog, though more with intention of perhaps bringing in a few new readers, than any hope of being ranked highly!
thanks for the link and the suggestion.
I would love to have a discussion (maybe over on my post makes more sense) about how food bloggers feel about the change too so it doesn’t look like “sour grapes” from us.
… and whether it matters at all or not
Thanks for this. I’ve warned Blogger to expect a traffic spike for Intoxicating Prose(!) I’m glad I wasn’t moved to wine & beer – I’ve been more concerned with food for well over a year.
PS. Those ravishing radishes are from the Cafe Anglais, no?
Great list! I’m familiar with only 2 or 3, so many new sites to check out. How are the rankings determined? Hold a steady course and we’ll see you make your way to the top!
Kavey – I only found out about Wikio Gastronomy a few months ago. I’m not sure how many people know about it really. I’m still struggling to fully understand the ranking system…
Rob – clearly wine and beer bloggers are most affected by this new move away from Gastronomy! I wonder how this will affect blogs that cover both food and wine?
Douglas – yes, you clearly should stay in Gastronomy even though you straddle both subjects. And they are Le Cafe Anglais radishes!
Tangled Noodle – I’ve copied and pasted the text from Wikio about how the ranking system works, so see above. Thanks!

Always interesting to get insight into the workings behind the curtains of these rating systems. I know several of the blogs but you’ve brought a few more to my attention. Congratulations on the top 10 status- that’s a heck of an accomplishment. What they do not say is to 20 or how many blogs, and I’d hazard a guess that we’re talking a lot! So to break the 20 speaks to a lot of work and talent, not to mention time.
From transitioning to a new blog site myself, and really starting over in terms of stats its interesting how the visitor count and followers works. I really started over and it surprised me.
Reading the explanation from Wikio about the ranking, it seems that having a partial RSS feed only may well be a disadvantage, but never mind… it works for me!
Thanks again!
OysterCulture – I think they’re talking about a lot of blogs, though I haven’t really paid that much attention to Wikio until recently (having heard of them only earlier this year!).
Kavey – I’m not sure about partial RSS feeds. I like to be able to read the whole post within my reader, then move over to the blog to leave a comment if I have something to contribute. To be forced over to the blog before I’m ‘ready’ is a bit irritating – and often I stop reading if the first few lines aren’t interesting enough to grab my attention, even if the rest of the post is spectacular…
Shocked to see myself in the top 10. I thought I had had quite a slow month blog hits wise, but maybe everyone else has had a slow month too!

Congratulations! I was hoping you’d see this and be pleasantly surprised!
