Wikio UK Gastronomy Rankings – October 2009
Oct 3rd, 2009 by admin
Dan from Wikio asked me to write a preview of the UK Gastronomy Top 20 rankings for October 2009. I wrote one back in July, so it’s been interesting comparing the two lists.
The Guardian’s Word of Mouth hasn’t budged from the number 1 position (I wonder if any independent food blogger will ever get to number 1?). London Eater didn’t even feature in the July top 20 but is now ranked 9th, while Tamarind and Thyme, who also wasn’t in the July list, has risen to an impressive 12th place. Dos Hermanos has also finally made the top 10. Gastronomy Domine moved from number 35 in August to 5th place, before dropping to 8th place this month. An American in London has joined the top 20 for the first time, as have Kavey Eats and Tinned Tomatoes. And if I haven’t mentioned you, it’s because you’ve more or less maintained your ranking. I look forward to visiting the several blogs that are new to me…

As some of you have asked this question before, I have copied and pasted the following from Wikio:
How are these rankings compiled?
The position of a blog in the Wikio ranking depends on the number and weight of the incoming links from other blogs. These links are dynamic, which means that they are backlinks or links found within articles.
Only links found in the RSS feed are included. Blogrolls are not taken into account, and the weight of any given link increases according to how recently it was published. We thus hope to provide a classification that is more representative of the current influence levels of the blogs therein.
Moreover, the weight of a link depends on the linking blog’s position in the Wikio ranking. With our algorithm, the weight of a link from a top blog is greater than that of a link from a blog that is less well ranked.
Our rankings are updated on a monthly basis and also include Top Blogs for several categories: Technology, Politics, etc. New categories will be added on a regular basis.

I must say these listings look a bit silly. There are fantastic blogs, popular blogs that are simply not there. Obviously I’m not for starters which is a bit odd. But also good blogs such as Lennie Nash and londonelicious.
msMarmitelover (and other readers) – I have to say I still don’t understand how the calculations work. Earlier in the year I saw that I wasn’t on the list and ’submitted’ my blog. I think I entered at 22nd place. Londonelicious is on the list (just not in this month’s top 20), and lots of great blogs are listed in the top 100. As always, lists will be controversial!

MsMarmiteLover, this list certainly shouldn’t be taken as definitive – a blog won’t be listed if it hasn’t been submitted to the site for ranking, either by the owner or anyone else who submits on their behalf.
Has yours been submitted?
No I haven’t submitted mine. I’m not sure listings where you have to submit your blog are worthwhile.
Bellaphon…there’s another great blog…
